What a drone inspection can provide
A drone can help inspect roofs, façades or elevated components without initially sending a person to them. It can also document their condition and enable image comparisons when capture conditions are sufficiently equivalent.
Before choosing it, define what needs to be detected and at what level of detail. An overview image may locate a visible anomaly, but cannot demonstrate structural strength or the condition of a hidden part. Remote observation must form part of an inspection method, with people responsible for interpretation and action.
Reducing exposure without shifting the risk
Avoiding hazardous access can offer a preventive benefit, but flight introduces other hazards: equipment falling, impact, proximity to installations, interference or distraction. Also assess preparation, transport, batteries and drone recovery.
Define the area, coordinate simultaneous activities and set conditions for stopping the operation. Do not turn recovery of a trapped device into an improvised entry into a hazardous area. The complete method must anticipate what to do if the inspection cannot finish as planned.
Operational requirements and responsibilities
Under the European framework, operational categories are risk-based; they are not determined solely by whether an activity is professional. EASA distinguishes open, specific and certified categories. The proposed operation determines which conditions must be met.
Check the category, pilot competence, operator status, geographical restrictions and any required authorisations or declarations. The operator and pilot may be different people. In Spain, current AESA guidance must be consulted for the specific case; permission from the facility owner does not replace aviation requirements.
Image quality and diagnostic limitations
Agree minimum criteria: areas covered, distance, lighting, location references and conditions that prevent observation. Record areas not inspected and avoid presenting a partial flight as a complete review.
If thermography or another sensor is used, interpretation requires preparation and consideration of measurement conditions. Classify findings according to their evidence and refer those that cannot be resolved visually for specialist checks. A striking image or automated detection is not, by itself, a technical diagnosis.
Privacy, traceability and follow-up
Minimise the capture of people and unrelated spaces. When personal data are processed, define the purpose, lawful basis, access and retention. Provide information as required and review the terms of the provider or storage service.
Link every finding to the facility, date, location and required action. Retain enough context to review the interpretation without accumulating unnecessary recordings. Inspection creates value when an anomaly becomes a decision and its resolution is checked, not simply when a video is saved.
Hypothetical example: inspecting a roof
A company needs to locate visible damage on a roof that is difficult to access. It plans a flight, controls the area and marks which zones can be observed clearly. An anomaly is detected near a skylight.
The report defines what was observed and requests a specialist check using safe access. It does not declare the entire roof safe to walk on or rule out hidden defects. The drone has reduced initial exposure and guided the intervention without replacing checks requiring other means.
